2000 YEARS OF HISTORY AND CULTURE
The queen of spa towns was founded by the Romans, who built their city around the natural hot springs. Nominated to become a UNESCO world heritage site in 2020, it has some of the most splendid architecture in Europe, from the Belle Époque to Art Nouveau and Art Deco masterpieces. Napoleon III rediscovered the healing qualities of the Vichy waters, and reinvigorated the city as a modern, fashionable spa resort. The dawn of the 20th Century marked its third resurgence with magnificent Belle Époque masterpieces like the glorious Opera House and the Parc des Sources (Hall of Springs).
The natural landscapes of Auvergne with its rivers, gorges, forests and volcanic crater lakes, have been formed over millions of years. There are wonderful restaurants, local vineyards, and markets where you can sample local wines, cheese and charcuterie from the hundreds of farms across the region.
Watch the bustling world go by from the terrace of a café on Place de Jaude – home of the bronze statue of Vercingetorix, leader of the Gauls who defeated Julius Caesar only a few kilometres south of here. Visit the unique 13th century cathedral, built entirely in jet black volcanic rock from the ring of extinct volcanoes that surround the city. Or experience our vibrant music, theatre and film festivals. And did we mention the cheese?
